My Students
I teach a combination class filled with 27 wonderful kids. Many of my children are the dependents of deployed military personnel.
My first and second graders attend an older, urban school designated as high poverty that does not have many resources other than textbooks.
They are great students but they suffer from serious handicaps. Seven students are over 1.5 years below grade level. I have six English Language Learner students. It is very difficult to find print materials at their reading level. They generally do not have access to technology at home.
This year for the first time in my short teaching career I find that I need more engaging resources and strategies to teach math and writing skills to my students, but our school does not have the budget for new materials.
All of my hard working students qualify for free breakfast and lunch; they love coming to school but they need the help of DonorsChoose.org to be successful in the 21st century.
My Project
I have taken workshops where other teachers have presented ways to organize classrooms using different apps and resources. I want to provide those opportunities to my first and second graders. I am asking for three Samsung Chromebooks and headphones. I plan to create a Tech Center/Math Intervention Station to provide access to the electronic resources that accompany our new math curriculum. I desperately need these computers so I can establish this math station for my struggling learners.
A special math center would encourage and stimulate learning while providing more diverse math drill experiences for my students.
I know that access to these computers would help my struggling students attain greater levels of math achievement.
I am very excited about the possibility of providing sustained help for my students. A good classroom should promote greater opportunities than I currently can provide for students. I need help to take each student from their current level to a new level. Teaching each child and helping them learn is very important but my students are at so many different levels that this is almost impossible. This special math intervention center would benefit all my students.
My students deserve a chance. With the help of donors, we can break the cycle of failure.
