I teach at an urban International Baccalaureate school. Our school is the most culturally diverse high school in our district. Over 55% of our students identify as hispanic/latino, 10% as black and 10% as asian/Hmong.
We are a Title One school, with over 65% of our students qualifying for free/reduced lunch.
We opened our doors 15 years ago and to date the High School Forensics (competitive speech, drama and Congress) team is the only academic and athletic team to have won a State Championship. Since winning this in 2016, the team always placed in the top 5 places at State. Due to the State Tournament being moved to another location this year and the cost of attending increasing drastically, we might not be able to attend without securing funding for the trip.
Competitive forensics is one of the best activities a student can participate in while in school. It teaches analytical skills, hons presentation skills and develops empathy in students. It builds skills that humans need to be productive members of society.
My Project
Our high school forensics team has placed in the top 5 spots at the State Tournament since 2015. This year the tournament has moved to the other side of the state and attending will be cost prohibitive for many students. Please help us offset this additional cost and give my students a way to showcase their talents and voice by helping us to fund the hotel stay.
Forensics (speech and interp) is an activity that teaches students skills they will use throughout their lives.
Building critical thinking skills teaching students to feel empathy and helps them learn how to present their ideas and beliefs in front of others. These are just a few of the skills students build when competing in forensics.
