At WES, we are pushing hard to increase the literacy of all students in a number of ways. Small groups, walk-to-read opportunities, and other good practices to build phonics and fluency abilities.
We have a new "Wildcat Vender" that allows our low-income and homeless students who make strong gains in reading to pick a good fit book of their own.
The students are awarded these using programs like Acadiance, Lexia, Star, and other teacher directed activities or groups to measure their gains.
Already this year, our school having the highest number of low-income families (90% of the students) have reached 3rd in helping students grow in reading and math. These book awards have really motivated our students, and now we are almost out. Help us have more to last the rest of the year! Thank you!
