Give my students a career in AudioVisual and Music Technology
Help me give my students audio/visual and music technology equipment to bolster in school productions and give my students the hands on skills needed to translate into a career in Arts & Entertainment fields.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Project
The model of teaching arts and music has shifted drastically. As a music teacher in an urban school, I have a plan to bring audio visual and music technology careers to the forefront of my students' imagination.
I've created a space for students interested in arts & entertainment who don't necessarily want to be centerstage under the bright lights.
These students manage the event production from live audio engineering to set and light design to stage management to video and editing. I am seeking a donor who is also passionate about the vision of supporting the development of transferable skills of time and team management, leadership skills and the technical skills of audio visual to the forefront.
When students produce events with me they find a sense of power, control and purpose. Often times the students who gravitate towards AV are the misfits, the kids who have behavior challenges, the kids who don't necessarily always excel academically but have so much to offer and at my school these students have truly found a home with the development of this program in the school. It's amazing to see the friendships that have been built, students going from being "loner's" to having daily after school jam sessions. Not only are these students talented at their work in A/V but I have found that their proximity to performers has allowed them to "try on" an instrument, or play around with singing into a mic, or getting on the drum-set to mimic others. It's within these small acts of musicianship, collaboration and creative play that contribute to the overall positive formation of identity, self confidence and help my kids become better humans!
