Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Help my struggling readers build reading skills (and geography knowledge) with engaging just-right books!

My students live in an urban, low-income city comprised largely of immigrant families.

Many of my students speak a language other than English at home. Despite the challenges that they face, the students in my school are consistently eager to learn, and enthusiastic about new and exciting learning opportunities. One exception, however, is with my struggling readers. The fourth grade students in my classroom represent a range of reading abilities, and many are reading significantly below grade level. Some have received intervention and support throughout their school years, yet continue to struggle with reading. By fourth grade, many of these struggling readers become frustrated and less motivated to read--especially when they are not able to enjoy the grade-level texts that interest them. I need to motivate these students to read and engage them with books that are at their independent reading levels AND a fourth-grade interest level.

My Project

I am requesting two series of fiction books that are set in the 50 states (American Chillers) and Washington, D.C (Capital Mysteries). These books are at the lower end of the fourth grade reading level and will engage my struggling readers--while at the same time helping to build their background knowledge of our country's geography! My students will be able to make connections between what they are reading and what we are learning about geography.

I need books to motivate and engage my struggling readers!

Fourth grade is a critical year for struggling readers as they become frustrated and lose their motivation to read. Help turn my students into readers with books that are right for them! These books are perfect because they will allow my students to make connections to what we are learning in class, and enjoy a great story at the same time!
