I have the pleasure of teaching blind and visually impaired students of all ages in Georgetown County, South Carolina. This area was recently hit hard by hurricane Matthew and suffered severe flooding last year, as well. Most of my students live in rural areas and are from low income families. Some of my students have other special needs, as well as a visual impairment.
My students want to participate with their sighted classmates in both educational and recreational activities, but often are limited because of their vision.
One of the hardest things for a lot of my kids, whether they are in general education classes or even in special education, is fitting in during recess and P.E. They often are excluded and feel left out from participating in certain games and sports because of their vision or lack of social skills.
My Project
I want to provide my students with the equipment and materials they need to participate in sports, recreation and leisure activities along with their sighted peers. Our students don't automatically obtain social and leisure skills as readily as their sighted peers. As a teacher for the visually impaired, we often have to fill in those gaps. Items such as beeper balls for sports such as football, baseball and soccer and braille versions of popular games such as Bingo are available, but are cost prohibitive since they are not considered as academic needs. I am requesting the materials, already mentioned plus Shape Dominoes, Old Maid, Tic Tac Toe, and other items, needed to give my students the recreational and social skills that they will have for life!
