Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
What do you do for children who have little opportunities.....you give them inspiration through music! How do you break the cycle of poverty....you teach D. Discipline, R. Responsibility, U. Unity and M. MUSIC! Can you teach children to not give up...yes, through persevering in music!
My students have many strikes against them.
Their families have limited finances, and many of them are first generation Americans, as their parents have immigrated from South America. In the classroom they face a culture and a language barrier, but in music they really excel! As a Title 1 school, we must focus on Reading and Math and thus there are limited resources for the arts. I have a chorus, but I feel that I am missing a whole student population who wants to be involved in music but would rather play an instrument. Their parents came to the United States with the hope of a better life; however, these children are struggling to adapt and make gains. Many of them feel lost and helpless in academics, but in music they soar.
My Project
To incorporate drumming in my every day lessons, I would need various World percussion instruments. In this proposal I am focusing on the "odds and ends" that include various authentic shakers, some wood blocks for sound effects, and steel drums that will provide the opportunity for my students to study Caribbean music. This is the third proposal for a 3-part project. The first two parts have already been funded! The dream is almost complete. These "odds and ends" will help to build opportunities in the ensemble to study world percussion from even more cultures as well as engage students in class lessons. I can only imagine the hands that will raise....or should I say shoot up to the sky like a rocket when I ask "who would like a turn at the steel drum?"
In addition to classroom use, these instruments will provide my D.R.U.M. club students a chance to showcase their individual talents. My students are so used to failure they have no idea what kind of "funky" rhythm they have!
Your donation WILL make a difference in these children's' lives.
I have already seen it with the completion of the first two projects. When we opened the drums I saw a look from my students that said "wow, someone thinks I'm important enough to donate this." Please help me to inspire these students to dream larger than the life they know. If I can give these students confidence in music through drumming, I feel they will gain that confidence in the classroom and outside in the community.
