Give a Meaningful Anatomy Experience this Christmas!
My students need to learn the basics about Anatomy with a rat dissecting set, gloves, solution and a rat dissection flip chart. Each group of 6-7 students will be able to do a full rat dissection.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My high school has already welcomed 125 newcomer students this school year alone (up to 150 students in January 2017).
These children are crossing into the US seeking refuge from extremely violent situations in Mexico, El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras.
Although these kids risk rape, extortion, and death in their journey to the U.S., they are left with little choice of staying in their country where they are daily targets of gang violence.
My students not only have to deal with the challenges of being in a new country, learning a new language, integrating into a new culture, and being thousands of miles away from their families, but they also have to sort through the trauma they faced in their home country, in crossing the border, and in their new and challenging life in the U.S.
I am a passionate science and mindfulness teacher working to provide a welcoming, safe, and productive learning environment to make these children's journeys and sacrifices worthwhile.
My Project
Students will be doing a rat dissection to learn all important concepts about anatomy, and most of the levels of organization of the living world, including body systems, organs, tissues, and cells.
This project would helps students learn about the internal structures of animals (and the human body), about how the tissues and organs are interrelated, and it would give students an appreciation of the complexity of organisms in a hands-on learning environment.
This project would have a huge impact in their lives, since it would be the first time that they will do a full dissection of a living specimen. In the end, they will be more curious and interested about science.
