We are a small public middle school serving roughly 370 students in our neighborhood of Oakland, CA. We are a small school by design, serving families within the community as well as students from throughout Oakland. The student body is about 87 percent Latino, and 56 percent of our students are English Learners. In addition, 90 percent of students qualify for free and reduced-price lunch and seven percent of our students are identified as needing special education services.
Our school culture is unique because it's very positive, encouraging, and uplifting.
My coworker and I coach a Girls on the Run team where our middle school girls learn to train and run a 5k as well as learn social and emotional life skills. I also coach our girls' basketball team.
Many times our students are nervous or anxious about participating because they do not have the proper exercise clothes.
We have noticed that most of our students do not have appropriate sports bras or leggings and we are hoping that if we can provide them, then they will be more willing and comfortable running! Proper supportive undergarments are something that many of us take for granted, but for many of our young ladies, it's a luxury that their families just cannot afford. Please help us help our girls run all out - this is the very definition of equity!
