My Students

I teach STEM to K-5 scholars in a very rural area in Edgecombe County, North Carolina. My classroom has be affected tremendously by the Coronavirus pandemic. Most of the activities we do in our class are hands-on group activities.

My school is a Title I school.

All of the scholars are given free lunch. The majority of our scholars are African-American and Hispanic. These groups are also highly underrepresented in STEM and Computer Science.

Even though I do not know what the 2020-2021 school year will look like, I continue to plan for the upcoming school year. Last year, I created a coding club for girls in grades 3-5 in at my school. The girls loved it! It is my hope that during the 2020-2021 school year, we will be able to add more girls to our club.

My Project

These books will make a difference in my scholars' learning from home by giving them step-by-step instructions on how to create games using Scratch 3.0. It is important that these young ladies are not just playing games, but creating them. Learning how to create games will build confidence while enhancing their ability to problem solve, both of which are needed in the real-world. This project will also give these young ladies the opportunity to be creative and a chance to compete at the highest level in STEM and Computer Science.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
