Help me give my students STEM challenge cards and classroom supplies (crayons, scissors, glue) so they will have their own set of supplies when they come to my class.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students come from one of the poorest regions in the United States. In my elementary school, 100% of our students qualify for free lunch and live below the poverty level. Many of these students come to school without their basic needs met, so it is not uncommon for them to come without supplies.
Reading, writing, science, math, history...these are all core subjects in schools.
My students, need to know and understand where these subjects can take them. All they've seen is the affect of generational poverty. My students need to recognize their potential and their ability to make a change.
My Project
I want my students to come to my class ready to learn, not worried that they won't have what they need. Every year is challenging for some of my students to have their supplies, but with the safety guidelines we're using now, it will be even harder for kids who depend on shared classroom sets of supplies.
I chose these supplies, not because they are unique to STEM lessons, but because they can be used by ALL of my students, grades K-6, as we learn about opportunities in science, technology, engineering and mathematics that they can pursue.
I want to make sure that every student who comes to my class has what they need to be successful. What we will do with those materials is inquire, investigate, research, and explore.
