Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are from a vibrant region in the state of Florida that takes pride in its rich Latino cultural heritage. Because of this, our population is made up of many English Language Learners. It is up to us to make sure they get the best education they deserve. My students are young, ambitious and curious. They work together as a team to achieve common goals. They are supportive of their classmates and celebrate the successes of their peers. They are a hardworking group of students who display excitement and enthusiasm toward learning.
Our philosophy is: we build our future one step at a time!
Our school is a Title I/Renaissance school. The majority of our students are from low-income families, which is reflected by our 91% free or reduced-price lunch status. Although my kids face socioeconomic challenges, they come to school every day willing to learn. I get the most satisfaction as a teacher when I see their faces light up when they finally "get it" or when I read a book that completely captivates their attention and takes them on a journey. Because materials are needed to achieve these goals, I have decided to start this project.
My Project
We can’t change the fact girls make up a very small percentage of the programmers, engineers, and scientists shown on television and in movies. What we can do, however, is make a difference in the lives of young girls we personally teach every day. I have had girl students in the past few years who love science, engineering, technology, and math (STEM) and this opportunity is perfect for them. The goal of this project is to expose girls in our after-school program to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) through robotics using the LEGO Mindstorm EV3 set. At the end of the course, the girls will have mastered basic and advanced programming skills, hardware and data logging functions as well as a love for STEM.
Why is it so important that we encourage more girls to go into the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM)?
Many of the people whom I have spoken to about this issue don’t seem to understand what the big deal is. Here’s why it’s so important to encourage more girls, specially in my community, to go into STEM fields: In a country in which the average women still earns 77 cents for every dollar that a man earns, and in a country in which the majority of single parents are single mothers (including my community), getting more women into STEM could both reduce the gender wage gap and ensure that single mothers don’t have to struggle to put food on the table. Not only are there currently more jobs in STEM than in any other industry, but most of these high-tech jobs are high-paying, as well. I hope you can help us achieve our goal.
