Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The phrase “we are in unprecedented times” has become one that rings true in many aspects of life. The world of education, especially for students, is one that has been impacted deeply by the current upheaval of life as we knew it. I have been given the opportunity to move from being a third-grade to a fifth-grade teacher with my past students for this upcoming year. Not only will I require resources of a higher caliber to challenge these soon to be preteens, but I am requesting materials that can be used either digitally or in person, as our future is still undecided. I plan to utilize these resources in ways that excite my students and remind them of the wonder and excitement in learning.

Although this situation is difficult, I know that through the use of literature and social-emotional learning, our classroom community will thrive regardless of the environment.

The resiliency, compassion, and problem-solving that students are learning through this horrendous ordeal are the skills that will create a stronger and smarter generation to mold our world of tomorrow.

My Project

Being 100% virtual since March of this year has added certain strains upon my students' learning that I did not expect. When giving independent reading time, most do not have books of their own to read. Our library is currently unable to distribute due to the constant increase of cases in our city. When given the option to read through an online forum, my students understandable complain about eye strain, headaches, and the amount of time they already spend looking at screens.

I would love to give my students the gift of the dystopian New York Times Bestseller, City of Ember for the holidays.

This book if perfect for transitioning my students into a new level of emotions when reading and would provide a great escape from the virtual world we currently reside in. I have requested bags, tissue paper, cards, and individual popcorn bags to amp up the giftability for some of my students who may receive little more than this under the tree this year.
