My Students

"The art of teaching is the art of assisting discovery."-Mark Van Doren. Our students are from a small, rural community in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Our community has a lower socioeconomic population, with state data showing 57% of the students being economically disadvantaged and 77% of the eligible students participating in free or reduced-price lunch programs, identifying it as a Title I school.

Our attendance averages above 95% daily with only one day this past year below 90%.

Our students are dedicated and enthusiastic learners. They react well to research-based instruction that incorporates techniques for teaching students with ADHD, cognitive impairments, autism, and many other personal learning differences.

My goal is to purchase supplies to support academic and social situations and focus on individual living and life skills. When this project is funded, my students will be able to have additional resources that will allow them to thrive educationally and emotionally in an effort to meet each individual’s personal potential.

My Project

This year has been filled with many twists as we work hard to stay in the building serving students face to face and being ready to switch to virtual when/if the time comes. These gift certificates will be placed in our classroom store for students to purchase. Our resource room economy incorporates financial literacy. It is organized for students to earn money through accurate work completion, effort, and behavior during academic times. The classroom store is open on Mondays where students can spend the earnings for the week. They have to make the decision to spend all or some of their money, save for a more expensive item, or donate part or all to charity. This reinforces financial literacy skills while spiraling back to classroom behavior as we discuss how the behavior over the last week progressed and how to earn more money through positive choices specific to each student.

Students who are motivated are more engaged resulting in increased learning.

We are a small community with local businesses that support our school whenever they are asked. In turn, I would like to offer gift certificates to my students that support our businesses and rewards my students for hard work during both face to face and virtual learning. Your support will help bring these needed supplies to our classroom and increase student engagement.
