My Students

My students are an amazing, curious, funny, and thoughtful crew! They live in an urban area, in a district that faces many financial struggles. They come to school each day with a willingness to learn and grow that never ceases to inspire me.

Their resilience, curiosity, and willingness to take risks to learn, make it such an honor to be their teacher.

I love going on a learning journey each year with my students. We visit fantastic settings through great literature, we dive into mathematical concepts and problems with gusto, and we investigate the world around us, both past and present.

My Project

Graphic novels are my absolute favorite way to build engagement in reading. They are hands down the first picks of so many kids - and help to create a true community of readers. I'd like to capitalize on that level of enthusiasm to add more graphic novels of all genres to our classroom library. These are the kinds of books that kids pass around, discuss, and recommend to their friends - which helps us to create a true community of readers in the classroom.

Graphic novels tackle serious subjects - like immigration, refugees, addiction, fitting in, coming of age, relationships, friendship, prejudice, and so much more.

They have complex plots, characters, and themes that make great fodder for literary conversations and complex language that broadens students' vocabularies. This project includes a variety of graphic novels on these topics, at varying reading levels. They are certain to help our kids keep reading TONS of books!
