Dramatic Play can be the most fun and inviting center for children to play in. Most people who have been in a play-based kindergarten or preschool classroom have fond memories of playing in the center with the kitchen and dress-up clothes. In my classroom, I seek to design the dramatic-play center intentionally with the themes we are learning about. We are going to be learning about animals and the items I am requesting specifically will engage the children in pretend play with animals in mind.
I want their imaginations to take them to the zoo, to the farm, or to the depths of a wild jungle.
When they see the stuffed animals and the clothes, I want their minds to create play scenarios that they get excited about! Opening their minds to dream of what they would do if they were an animal or what they would do if they took care of animals sparks meaningful conversations.
By enriching the center with clothes and animals and props, we are giving these children an opportunity to use speech, language and vocabulary that is BIG and new for them. Southwest Virginia is a very rural area. There is no zoo anywhere close to us. A large portion of our kids will never see the animals we are learning about in person. Enriching this center is going to be exposure to things they have never and may never see.
My class is a handful of loving, caring, smart, and curious children. They love to learn and see new things. They deserve the best that life has to give. My goal is for them to learn about animals and love every moment of it.
