Getting Vertical to Increase Math Understanding & Skills

Help me give my students dry erase erasers and markers, large chart paper for whiteboards, dry-erase boards, and desk-top easels to create better learning in math.

My Project

I am passionate teacher who is building a Thinking Classroom in my third grade classroom. This vertical learning I am trying to build in my classroom comes from Peter Liljedahl’s research that if kids aren’t thinking, they aren’t learning. The donations to this project will help to improve my students’ mathematical thinking, understanding, and motivation in math (which will transfer to better thinking in other areas). Peter Liljedahl’s research and data shows that kids thinking dramatically improves when they are vertical (standing), using whiteboards, and problem solving together.

My students will use the whiteboards as they work in partners of 2 or 3 to solve work through and solve problems together.

Since the whiteboards are vertical, they will be able to view other classmates’ boards, if needed, to guide their thinking and build understanding. We will also view each other’s boards as students share and discuss. (Note: I will mount the whiteboards to the easels, so they will be sturdy and easy to put away each day.)

My students learning will benefit greatly by having these magnetic whiteboards, markers, erasers, and chart paper for the whiteboard. They will also be able to use magnetic math manipulatives to model and demonstrate when problem solving. They will then be able to transfer ideas and model work and learning process to white board chart paper to be shared and discussed in a more permanent display.
