My Students

Capital City Public Charter School is an urban public school with one of the most diverse student bodies in the city. Many of our students come from backgrounds where different lifestyles, like homosexuality, are not respected.

Capital City Public Charter School's Upper School is composed of 371 students, in grades 6-12.

They are exuberant and thoughtful, though often lack the vocabulary to express ideas about people who they consider "different." They often speak compassionately, but their actions sometimes lack the thoughtfulness of their words.

My Project

We are requesting the funds for transportation and rental of two movie theaters (one would not accommodate our entire student body.) Included in our quote is money for tables and microphones, as we intend to use the viewing of "Bully" as an opportunity to have a "teach-in" about bullying. As a Facing History and Ourselves school, we were already discussing bringing students to the movie before the opportunity for funding became available, and many teachers are interested in the workshop on "Bully."

Capital City is an expeditionary learning school-we believe students learn by going out in to the community and gaining enriching experiences.

If our project was funded, we could have an anchor-film that all students and teachers would be able to reference, during dialogues inside and outside of the classroom. Our school could become a safer space for all students, and our population could gain a shared reference and language when it comes to defeating the universal "Bully" problem.
