Our students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, we as teachers look to keep things simple and provide students with creative and meaningful learning experiences.
We are a Title I School where our entire school receives free lunch and breakfast.
While many of their home lives may not be desirable, school is a place where they feel secure and can be themselves! We want to do as much as possible for them to feel comfortable and focused on reaching their highest learning potential!
My classroom has 24 hard working busy bees! My children are blessed to have iPads to use in class along with a charging cart and cases. At times there are projects that require more memory and would be preferable to complete with an actual computer with a key board and mouse. Students enjoy creating projects and presentations on their iPads but it would be beneficial for them to have access to an actual computer that uses the same style that they have used on their iPads. Our classroom has two desktop computers but PC's and their software are different than what is available on MACs.
As stated before, the students are blessed to have iPads in the classroom in which we work hard to integrate in our classroom learning. We use them for personalized learning, presentations and projects. Students enjoy using Apple based programs like iMovie to create presentations through videos, pictures and songs.
The students enjoy the ease of usage with MAC products, unfortunately we don't have any other MAC compatible computers available for them to use in our school.
In the real world, they are going to need to type on actual computers, in which the keyboards are dissimilar than their iPads. They also like making multimedia projects in which they are sometimes limited due to storage capacities on their iPads. It is much easier to use the computer to maximize their design potential by using the Mac Book Air than the iPads. Students have inquired about using these Mac based programs on the 2 desktop computers available in our classroom but programs like iMovie and KeyNote aren't desktop compatible.
I believe that it will be beneficial to their learning so that they can actually get used to creating these projects on an actual computer instead of a tablet. In real-world application, they have to learn how to use an actual mouse and keyboard. I can't imagine that they would type up published poems, papers, and essays while using a tablet. They need a way to practice their skills on an actual computer that is comparable to the technology that they are using in their classroom on a daily basis.
My students need a Mac Book Air, Mac compatible software, a Mac compatible DVD/CD drive, key card, headphones, and other accessories, to create multimedia projects and share them with their peers and families.
