Getting Students Interested in Environmental Science

My students need textbooks, a document camera and a few supplies to carry out labs. I am starting a new Environmental Science class in our school. I have no supplies to start the year with.

My Students

My students need to be aware that the daily choices they make will make a big difference in the future of our environment, from chemicals they use, to what they eat and the cars they drive. There are many challenges they will face with the environment in the future. They need to be ready.

I teach at a public high school in the suburbs.

My students come from all backgrounds. I am happy to say that I have many females and minority students signing up for the class. Environmental Science is usually an area dominated by men. These students are very interested in the environment. We need more young adults to take an interest in their Environment. They only have one Earth, and they are the future that has to work hard to sustain it. This is a new class this year in the school. We have have no supplies to get started. The students come from all backgrounds and learning styles. But first and foremost they need the textbooks. This is an AP class so the students will be taking the Environmental Science AP exam in the spring of 2014. I currently have 40+ students signed up for the class. As soon as we offered the class, students couldn't waite to sign up. I'm happy to see interest in such an important subject matter.

My Project

The first thing that was needed were textbooks. Since the class is new in the school, we are starting with nothing. I have chose a very good textbook that covers all areas that will be covered on the AP exam in the spring. These include the Living World, Human Populations, Earth Systems and Resources, Land Use, Energy Resources and Consumption, Pollution and much more. I have also chosen a few items to help us get started with labs. We will be attending a stream study to a nature center and will need some water testing kits. I also asked for some seeds to do a toxicity, bioassay lab. These are just a few of the supplies I will need to get the program up and running. I also asked for a document camera to be able to display their lab reports on the overhead immediately after the labs for discussion. I used this at my summer institute and found it very valuable for the students. I added in a workbook on preparing for the AP exam.

The health of our Environment is so important to us today.

The average lifespan of individuals is so must more than it was even just a few years ago. However, now the earth needs to be able to support us all for a longer amount of time. My students are the future. The minds that we will have to depend on to help do just that.
