I teach at a Title I school in Florida where 100% of our students receive free breakfast and lunch. I have the privilege to teach in high poverty schools for seven years. My students are from a low-income families and their parents have at least two jobs to provide better life to their children. As most educators know, children from low-income households often arrive at the kindergarten door substantially behind children from higher-income households. On average, children from poor families score far below their peers from higher-income families in early vocabulary and literacy development, in early math, and in the social skills they need to get along well in their classrooms.
Literacy centers is a time for learning and playing to happen together and it is an important part of my early childhood classroom. Literacy centers for a Pre-K Class can last an entire year, have little to no upkeep and can grow with students, putting them in charge of differentiation, offer choice and be open-ended. But selecting materials, tools, and toys for a literacy center is very important. If the manipulatives are not attractive enough kids usually pick other centers. This year I am trying to make my Literacy Centers more attractive for my young students so I can engage them learning and support the development of skills like letter identification and phonological awareness, therefore I picked an Alphabet Sounds Picture Puzzle set, a Learning Letters Activity Set, a Build-A-Word Houses and a What’s the Rhyme? Sorting Houses set in order to have my students fully engaged. With these manipulatives my new literacy center will allow me to be the most effective at teaching.
