My students need 8 assorted tools to help them learn how to read and begin to add and subtract.

My Students

Imagine coming to a new country, not knowing the language or the culture, and being thrust into a classroom with many children who do not look like you or speak like you. This is the reality of many of my students, and it is up to the teacher to create an environment to helps them learn.

Our school has the most diverse student population I have ever experienced.

We have students from four continents, including many parts of Africa, the Middle East, Asia, and Latin America. We are fortunate to be able to offer them an alternative to the neighborhood schools to which they would otherwise have to attend. They are bright and ready to learn, though many of their parents have limited English abilities, often work more than one job, and are limited in how much they can help at home.

My Project

I am requesting two sets of tactile sight word cards, which will help students who have learn best by touch become familiar with sight words that are essential for reading. With the cards, I am requesting a set of sight word journals and Creating Sight-Word Sentences Center to help with sight word recognition as well. I am also requesting two letter sounds games: Phonemic Awareness Listening Lottos game and Match-A-Sound! Phonemic Awareness Boxes to give students a chance to play a fun game while learning letter sounds. I am also requesting a Classroom Magnetic Letters Kit for word building games and because there will be a math component of our summer school we will have a mathematics component. The kit should provide us with the means to learn math skills in a fun way.

Summer school, for many of the students, is the last chance to learn the skills they need to advance to the next grade.

Without success in summer school, they may be forced to repeat a grade, which can be detrimental to their self esteem and future academic path. These tools will give them a greater opportunity to learn the important skills they need to advance to the next grade.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
