My students need a multi-function printer for writing projects and adapting class texts to appropriate levels as well as to provide multilingual supports.

My Students
The saying "it's all Greek to me" is a familiar one for my students. Imagine what it's like walking into middle school one day only knowing how to say "hello" and "I don't know." Navigating the long hallways and crowded cafeteria then becomes quite the challenge.
Each day my ESL students come to school and make the brave effort toward learning English, but often find the enormity of the challenge rather defeating.
Coming from a range of cultural backgrounds and immigrant experiences, primarily Spanish, Chinese, and Arabic-speaking, my students are enthusiastic, multi-faceted young teens. In our large urban middle school, however, they are lost at first without peer linguistic support and materials they can understand. Then furthermore, despite the notion that technology allows us to have "the world at our fingertips," the challenges often facing working class, recently immigrated families mean that most of my students have little access to extend their English language learning outside of school due to limited finances.
My Project
Simply put, "they have it in Spanish too," is not enough to meet the learning needs of my students. Though thankfully there are more multilingual materials today than in the past, the current array does not accommodate all of the concepts my students need to learn and practice on a daily basis. For early language beginners who can barely ask to go the bathroom, they need so much support at the start of school year just to understand daily routines.
A classroom printer would allow me the ability to immediately customize and adapt materials as necessary for my students. No longer would precious instructional time be lost waiting for students to finish copying down the essential material screened on the board. No longer would there be weeks-long delays for copies due to the school's low printing budget. Permanent reference copies could be available in the classroom as well as for students' personal use at home, especially for those without access to computers and internet.
The possibilities of what my students can learn from one other and ways they can enrich our school community are limitless, as long as they have a safe space to grow their confidence in English.
They can then make better sense of the content in their other classes and start to feel more at home in their new school. This is what I hope to cultivate in my classroom and what your donation can help accomplish.
