A typical day in my classroom consists of students being actively engaged in a variety of activities that encourage life long habits or being physically fit. Students are encouraged to monitor and record their daily progress towards meeting their fitness goals.
My students are unique in the way that they live in a very rural Wyoming community with less than 50 students in the complete K-12 school.
They are eager to be exposed to and attempt new activities all the time as their experiences are often limited due to their geographic location. Farming and ranching are a main way of life for many of my students, and their family and personal fitness is not often given much consideration. Most students are lacking in technological experience and our school is their main source of computer/Internet access.
My Project
The FitBit Zip Activity Monitors will mainly be used during Physical Education classes in which students will be monitoring their daily activity levels. Students will also be allowed to wear the monitors throughout the school day as well as check them out for weekend use if so desired. Students will use the iPad to monitor their progress and create graphs in which they can identify trends for future goal setting. The FitBit Zip will allow my students to be more engaged in altering their fitness levels and use technology in a positive manner to do so.
This project being funded would benefit my students health and fitness levels as well as empower them to take charge of and make changes of their own personal wellness.
By using current technology, students will be more engaged in the process and will have personal data in which changes can be made. What better gift to give, then the gift of a healthier life?
