My students need to access to video clips and other multimedia techniques to be engaged in daily instruction and literacy interventions. My students need a projector.

“The more you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go.” (Dr. Seuss, "I Can Read With My Eyes Shut!") This is so true, yet sadly most of the students I work with are in high school reading on a 3rd - 5th grade level.
I currently teach a literacy intervention class for high school students.
My school is located in North Philadelphia, where 98% of students receive free or reduced breakfast and lunch. Some students are on only the third grade reading level, however, are sitting in regular education classes attempting to comprehend complex literary pieces. My goal is motivate these students to work diligently on improving their reading level. I have access to curriculum, but these students need something to engage with, access prior knowledge, and if nothing more excite them about the passage or story we are working on. I believe video clips and multimedia techniques are the best way to reach today’s students.
Can you imagine reading a passage about plate tectonics without any background knowledge of tectonics, earth quakes, or Pangaea. The way the literacy curriculum is designed allows students of all reading levels to access content through leveled reading material. The problem exists when students have no prior knowledge of a particular concept. With the projector, I will be able to show small video clips that inform the students as well as engages them into the lesson.
The greatest gift we can give students is the ability to read.
The students I work with cannot be successful in post secondary education or the vocational field if they do not have the foundation of being able to read. Your gift will engage and motivate these students to be work diligently at improving their reading level.
