Getting Down And Dirty: Building Our Outdoor Classroom

My students need an outdoor table and four chairs and a gardening tool set to begin the construction of their own outdoor classroom.

My Students

Would you rather work in a dark, dreary classroom or a bright, refreshing outdoor environment? My students would greatly benefit from an outdoor classroom that provides an exciting learning environment and innumerable educational and character-building opportunities, too.

With over 96% of my students qualifying for a free or reduced lunch, they come from families with very little income.

Most students are unable to participate in extra-curricular activities, not because they lack ability but because their parents lack the funds to enable them to participate. My students have expressed great enthusiasm in a new "Go Green!" club wherein we will makeover our school grounds and transform our dank, dreary school courtyard into an interactive and engaging outdoor classroom that is accessible by all students. Participants will contribute creative landscape design ideas and will work together to create their own masterpiece - an outdoor classroom which can seat up to 30 students at one time surrounded by colorful flowers, plants, and other natural elements. With their minds engaged, their life skills stretched, and their hearts committed, my students will be able to look back on this project and say, "WE did this!"

My Project

Our Outdoor Classroom Project (OCP) will be completed in three phases. Phase One will require the use of the gardening set to enable my students to clean up our current courtyard, which is littered with debris and dead trees and leaves. The table and chairs will initially be used as a small outdoor classroom. OCP: Phase 1 will take approximately 20 hours of work for a group of 15-20. OCP: Phase 2 will include the construction of the outdoor classroom benches to seat 30 students. Finally, OCP: Phase 3 will include the planting of all flowers and plants in the Spring of 2011. In order for us to meet the deadline for this project, we need to receive the supplies for Phase 1 by the second week in January 2011. By participating in the Go Green! OCP, students will learn not only the importance of being responsible for one's environment but they will also develop significant life skills such as perseverance, time management, commitment, and working well with others.

The potential for this project is IMMENSE!

Members of the Go Green! Club will ensure that the courtyard is kept in mint condition through weekly clean-ups & seasonal plantings. In addition, they will implement other environmental awareness projects throughout the school year, including a school-wide recycling & composting program. The limited resources of our school and students' families make it impossible for us to fund this project on our own. We cannot do this project without you!
