This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students live in a very industrial, urban area and most don't have any experience with gardening. We would like to start a flower and vegetable garden on our campus. This could help our students not just experience gardening but also get hands-on experience that relates to numerous state science and math standards.
In a community that is an industrial food desert, it is vitally important to our families to have a community garden.
This project would give our students and families the ability to grow and enjoy a variety of fresh produce. Students would be able to experience planning a garden, plant life cycles, pollination, and many more. The different raised garden beds and trellises will allow us to accommodate the variety of vegetable and flower seeds we hope to grow. Garden tools, natural fertilizer, and hoses will help us care for and cultivate our plants. The hydroponic system will be used to teach explicit lessons about alternative sustainable agriculture systems.
This project will be ongoing for years to come, utilized year after year. This means donations will impact an untold number of students and families.
