Getting Comfy While Learning

Help me give my students new rugs for the two second-grade classes. The rugs have continents and oceans which will be used for many lessons throughout the year, as well as enough space for the kids.

My Students

Our elementary school is in a rural area in a small community 55 miles outside of Washington, D.C. There are 190 students in grades kindergarten through fifth grade. Our student body is diverse with a range of affluence from lower to higher socioeconomic status. Based on score reports from last year, our school was fully accredited. Due to special learning circumstances, there is daily support from special education and English Learner teachers. We serve students with a wide range of needs, from typically developing students to students with mild disabilities. We have some English Learners who receive support from our EL teacher.

We have 34 students in our second grade with a wide range of backgrounds, cultures, socioeconomic status, and learning styles.

My Project

In second grade, we cover continents and oceans as well as many other lessons that reference places around the world. Having a rug that is a world map, will help the students learn geography as well as the cardinal directions. It gives them an opportunity to see the world map every day as reinforcement of the lessons.

This map will give students a large visual representation of the world and where we are within it.

This is particularly helpful for visual learners and EL students that typically struggle with new vocabulary.
