This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I work in a Title I school teaching first graders. The students I serve live in a high poverty area. They receive free breakfast and lunch. Most of them come from a single parent home or have grandparents who are raising them. Parent involvement is very low at my school.
My students often don't have the experiences that other children have.
Many of them have never been to the beach or on a plane. When asked to write about a favorite birthday party or trip that they have taken, they struggle.
My Project
My first graders are kinesthetic learners and move around the classroom frequently. With a new and larger carpet, all of my students will be able to have a space of their own and focus on listening during whole group lessons and not have to worry about finding a spot to sit on the carpet. I will also be able to have students work in small groups together and read comfortably on the carpet.
Currently my students and I have a small classroom carpet that another teacher was throwing out.
It is a daily occurrence that I hear, "There's no room on the carpet." This creates a sense of not belonging. Having a larger carpet will help create a sense of belonging that some students seem to feel when it is whole group time.
