Getting Comfortable With the Uncomfortable Topic: Suicide Prevention
Help me give my students a classroom that feels safe while we learn about suicide prevention and self-care. This includes furniture such as tables, bean bag chairs, floor pillows, and more.
The student-led team will learn about mental health, self-care, compassion fatigue, and signs of suicide/depression as they develop as a team to support one another in their purpose of preventing suicide. They will be certified as QPR trained students capable of Questioning, Persuading, and Referring peers who seem to be struggling to the adults who can help. These students often go on to careers in health care after participating in this team.
The purpose of the safe space classroom is to have a place where they receive support with their own mental health as they face challenges while helping others.
Compassion fatigue and vicarious trauma are real factors for those helping in this field. A comfortable classroom (with tables, bean bag chairs, floor pillows, etc.) that feels like their own space, rather than a traditional classroom, can have a welcoming comfort that allows one to decompress and openly share.
