Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

After high school most students look forward to attending college or applying for jobs. For my special education students, though, the world outside school is a challenging place. It's up to us to explicitly teach them how to act in the workplace, in stores, and in other places in the community.

My students are special education students with disabilities that prevent them from communicating.

Most also have disabilities such as autism or cognitive disabilities. Many also come from low-income families, since we live in one of the poorest cities in the United States. Despite their challenges, my students are wonderful teenagers with the potential to find real jobs after they graduate from high school. They just need to learn how to act appropriately in the community...places like stores, workplaces, and restaurants.

My Project

My students love computers and will love using this software to learn community skills. Just like they have to be taught to read, do math, or tell time, my students need to be taught how to act appropriately in the community, and how to interact appropriately with the people there. Most students can learn these things on their own by watching their parents. Because of my students' disabilities, they can't. This software will teach my students social and community skills.

Even if students have the cognitive skills they need to do a job, order in a restaurant, or go to a store, if they don't have the right social skills they won't be able to complete these tasks.

Learning social skills will help my students participate in the real world.
