Getting a Head Start on the New Year!

My Project

I teach 6th grade in the best middle school in the district! Sixth grade can be a difficult time because not only are students starting in a new building, but their bodies are also going through lots of changes that can be scary for them.

Some of my students come to school without some of the basic necessities to be successful every day.

This project is meant to make sure my students never have to worry about where their next pencil comes from or what they are going to do if they get an unexpected visit from Aunt Flow.

I believe there to be a black hole in my classroom that only eats pencils. During this current school year, I have gone through almost 1,500 pencils, no exaggeration, for whatever reason. I am hoping to restock my pencil stash as well as have enough pencil top erasers to keep pencils living and in use for as long as possible.

Sixth graders are also wiggly creatures. They are starting to build the stamina required to sit in class for extended periods of time each day. Sometimes this results in them leaning back in their chairs, which is just asking for someone to fall backwards and get hurt. As an alternative, I would like to offer them a place where they could stand and get their wiggles out, so I am also asking for standing desks to put in the back of the room as an option for them during these wiggly times.

The last thing you will see in this project are Jolly Ranchers. We use an online program to give students their extra boost in math every day. The Jolly Ranchers will be used to reward students who complete their daily intervention work.
