This helped to not only build background knowledge and understand Tristan's story better, it also built excitement for the actual novel! We read this book in small groups, taking turns to read. Eventually, the students decided it'd be fun to choose a character and \"act\" out their part as we read. This added new life to the story and it was fun to hear everyone's voice. \r\n\r\nNow that we've finished reading, our class will create our very own \"story box\" like the one Tristan rescues in the book. It will contain personal narratives and stories that are special to our class. This book was both fun to read and an impactful one to discuss--- students reflected on friendship, fear, what it means to be \"strong,\" and the legacy of slavery in the United States.
