My Students

My students are 21st-century learners. They love using technology in our classroom, and I integrate it as much as possible into all of the subject areas. My students are a bunch of inquisitive learners.

I teach at a small neighborhood school with approximately five hundred sixty students.

We first opened our doors in 1950. Arts in education is a major emphasis on our campus. Our school's mission is to develop children into life-long learners as a result of a challenging curriculum, individualized instruction, high expectations, and a nurturing environment with parental and community involvement.

My class is made up of eighteen diverse students, from students with special needs to those who are identified as gifted and talented. I encourage my students to appreciate each others' differences, as well as find similarities among each other. They are very active, creative, and enjoy learning.

My Project

In a community of almost 60% of the same ethnicity, we would like to opportunity to expose our elementary students to the diversity our world offers. Our homogenous community may not offer opportunities to our young students to understand that we live in a heterogeneous world. This will be an extension to our Holidays Around the World unit.

Our world is made up of many beliefs, customs, traditions, and ideas.

In order for our first graders to fully understand that, we would like to give them the opportunity to experience what others celebrate and share their own traditions. These materials will encourage conversations among family members and giving the students a chance to practice oral language skills including: fluency and rate of speech, volume, and appropriate vocabulary. Family members will help the students make short home videos sharing one piece of their holiday tradition. Students will also field questions from their classmates and practice appropriate responses that reflect understanding and interpretation, while others ask relevant questions and make contributions to the group.

The other supplies will be used to create stamps for the passports to be used as we learn about countries all over the world. The bags will be used to create luggage to put the "souvenirs" that the students create when they visit each country.

This unit allows us to incorporate all academic strands such as language arts, social studies, science, math, and technology. Families will be invited to participate as well as view our in-class projects digitally, strengthening our home-school connection.

They will gain a deeper understanding of their own culture. Students will be able to describe the importance of various beliefs, customs, language, and traditions of their own families and compare them to others.
