Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a school-based speech pathologist working with the special education population. I work with a group of amazing children who range from Pre-K through 4th grade. My mandated group sizes range from 1:1 to 1:3 ratio. I have mostly autistic, intellectually and developmentally delayed children on my caseload. My students take longer to gain skills than their peers.
Many of my students struggle with communicating their wants, needs, and ideas.
They need exposure to a variety of materials and strategies to help improve their communication skills. I use various methods to meet their goals including art, play, and social games. I am in a barrier-free community school, which means we are equipped to provide services to children who may need a handicapped-accessible building. We are in a low socioeconomic part of Brooklyn, New York.
Although my students have many struggles, they are happy, positive children.
They are enthusiastic learners and I want to give them as many opportunities as possible to be successful.
My Project
My students benefit from a variety of materials to meet their goals. They struggle with reading comprehension, vocabulary, word-finding skills, and phonemic awareness. Additionally, my students need to practice skills like following directions and turn-taking.
These materials were chosen because they will target reading comprehension, turn-taking, and following directions through gameplay.
There are a variety of skills targeted by each game. "Wh" questions ("who," "what," etc) sequencing skills, predicting outcomes and using context clues are built into each game. I know my students will enjoy playing these games. The reinforcement of comprehension skills turn-taking skills, and following directions will be valuable to their educational success.
