As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, I am looking to keep things simple and provide my students with creative and meaningful learning experiences.
My students are creative, clever, and very spontaneous.
I teach an amazing class of 32 kids in Jamaica, Queens. Many of my students are English Language Learners. Most receive free and reduced price lunch. All of my students are creative, thoughtful, and eager learners.
My Project
As we all know, kids love to move! Everyone learns in different ways, and many of us learn best while moving. Through this project, I hope to give my kids options to find a seat that will help them be most successful in school.
Flexible seating allows my students to take charge of their own learning by choosing a seat where they will be able to do their best work.
By offering my students flexible seating options, such as wobble chairs, floor pillows, and beanbag chairs my hope is that every student can find an option that will help them learn.
The flexible seating options will be used for students who find they work best while being able to fidget or move. The floor pillows will be offered at a lower table for those students who feel they work best in a comfy environment. Students are noticeably more engaged when given their own choice of where to work, as well as given the tools they need to move while they work if needed.
