Many of them immediately recognized their favorite treats and were grateful to know they would have something special to look forward to during testing season. This year was particularly important because it was my students' first time taking the New York State ELA and Math Assessments. The arrival of these resources helped create a positive and encouraging atmosphere, and my students felt supported knowing that others are cheering them on and investing in their success.\r\n\r\nWe used these snacks as motivation and encouragement leading up to the state tests, as well as during and after testing days. My class spent countless hours reading, writing, and concentrating on lengthy computer-based assessments, which requires tremendous focus and dedication. They enjoy watching it swim, noticing its colors, and talking about what they see. These moments encourage curiosity, conversation, and early science learning.\r\n\r\nStudents also love comparing the Betta fish to our class goldfish. They notice differences in color, fins, and how each fish swims. This helps them practice observing and describing similarities and differences. Caring for the fish has become a meaningful part of our daily routine—and a highlight of the day.\r\n\r\nOne of our favorite moments is watching the fish recognize our \"Pet Helper.\" As soon as she approaches the tank to feed them, they swim right to the glass as if greeting an old friend. This simple interaction has taught our students about responsibility, empathy, and the joy of nurturing living things.\r\n\r\nWe have already harvested 3 sets of pea shoots from the garden and discuss how the shoots can be used in salads.
