This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students' perseverance in life makes them special. As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, we have many students who often by age 5 or 6 have experienced more trauma and adversity than most adults. Their challenges are evident both in and out of the classroom. Despite these challenges, they arrive to school with open hearts, willing attitudes, and an equally evident ability to succeed.

Like most school districts in southern California, our funding is tight, causing many programs and specials to be cut from the budget.

Our students have little exposure to the arts or structured physical education. With a demographic composed of greater than 50% free or reduced lunch, they have little opportunity and/or availability of funds at home to gain these experiences outside of school either. From the moment they come through our doors, we focus on their potential and growth. We offer hugs, listening ears, and a safe structured environment. However, the lack of funds makes it difficult for us to provide the tools they need to fully explore and develop their unique abilities and hidden talents.

My Project

The skills our students acquire at this young age will help better prepare them for a lifelong commitment to improved health and mental clarity. The materials will fill an immediate gap in our school as our current jump rope supply is old and in bad repair. We do not have any kind of protective mats for floor exercises or stretching, yet the kids love creative movement and floor work.

The new ropes and mats will help them proactively learn life skills, such as flexibility, strength, and cardiovascular conditioning.

Additionally, the newer equipment will improve student engagement, pride, and joy in the classroom.
