Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My 7th and 8th grade home economics students are an energetic bunch of teens who love to socialize and have fun. Our Title I middle school is located in a high-poverty, working-class neighborhood. About 60% of our student body receives free or reduced-price lunch, and many of them speak English as a second language.
You wouldn't know it from looking at them, but many have already experienced trauma, disruption, and loss in their young lives.
After school, most either go home to babysit younger siblings or attend after-school care until 5 or 6. For young teens, all of this responsibility at home can result in extra exuberance while at school. Although they sometimes forget to focus on academics, most of our students are aspiring scholars who might very well be the first in their families to attend college!
My Project
To captivate 21st-century learners is not always an easy task, but my students love to compete! Breakout Edu kits are boxes with a series of locks. Student teams race against each other to see who can answer a series of questions, enter the codes, and "break out," or open, the locks first. These high-engagement games will really appeal to my middle school students. Financial literacy is a key skill for "adulting", but it's rarely taught in school.
My home economics class is the perfect place to teach students about budgets, the cost of credit and loans, and how to stay in the black.
Middle school students are on the cusp of so many important decisions. Soon, they will be inundated with credit-card offers and student loans. Let's prepare them now to navigate these consequential decisions with a firm grasp on financial literacy!
