My Students

My school is one of the truly diverse public schools in New Orleans, a real reflection of the city and its people. Our school offers the Montessori program and, therefore we free the child's potential and aim for lasting peace and a love for learning.

My classroom is unique; it is an all kindergarten version of an early childhood Montessori classroom.

However, I am AMS Early Childhood certified and incorporate and use as much of Montessori practices and ideology as possible. We have practical life, sensorial, language/reading, math, geography, and cultural studies areas in the classroom. During work time, the students are free to choose and receive lessons in all areas.

Ms. J is my fabulous TA, and we are a community above all, respecting and taking care of one another. Their curiosities are bursting at the seams and luckily, we are encouraged as teachers to invest in our students' interests.

My Project

Believe it or not, my students can't wait to learn how to read. Getting to have a reading book folder and 'shop' for leveled books is the most exciting thing. From singing sequence songs to touching sandpaper letters, early literacy develops in many different forms.

This project is about approaching language from an expansive perspective, considering all different types of learners and making language arts enjoyable for a variety of students at all different levels.

Materials in this reading project include: sandpaper letters, primary writing journals, pencil sharpeners, song speaker (for oral language development), and mesh bags for movable alphabet letters to form simple words for individual, small group and whole group lessons.

Luckily, a Montessori environment already supports different types of learners and understands that students are on different levels and progress at different paces. These materials would fit into and expand our existing language area. Help these kindergarten students have additional reading and language experiences by supporting this project!
