Get Pumped Up for Scientific Literacy

Help me give my students patterned paper to decorate the covers of their lab journals, so that they can get pumped up about writing scientifically. The duct tape is for color coding the spines by class.

Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

My students are a bunch of hard working, creative, talented kids who are always eager to learn. We are a Title-1 school in one of the largest counties in the state of Georgia. 100% of our kids are economically disadvantaged. Our county as a whole is ranked 153rd out of 182. However, our school/our kids are ranked 21st in the state, and 552 nationally. This is awesome! My kids work hard and strive to improve, every day. I want to help them do this. My goal is to increase students' scientific literacy and writing skills. In order to do this, I am going to be requiring all students to keep a 1/2 composition notebook of scientific journal entries and reviews of (super cool/ interesting) scientific articles.

In order to make this more fun and engaging, I would like to provide them with composition notebooks and art supplies to personalize their journals.

Having their own touch on a "boring" (not actually boring) task, will hopefully help this seem less like a chore, and more like a movie critique where their own voice can be heard when they share out in class.

My Project

Something that I find students struggle with is reading and writing scientifically. To address this weakness, I am going to require my kids to read a scientific article and write a review/summary as if they were science critics. I know at first that this will seem like busy work to them, but hopefully I can make it a little more fun by having them personalize their journals.

My goal is to get the kids pumped up about filling every page of their personalized, hand-decorated science journal.

They will use patterned paper and colored duct tape. By the end of the year, I'm hoping that my students will be able to look back and see their growth as scientific readers and writers. This practice will prepare them for taking more advanced courses like AP biology, AP chemistry, or AP physics. The more comfortable they are with reading and writing scientifically, the less scary those difficult courses will seem.
