My Project
At our school in northwest Detroit, students have been asking for years to eat lunch outside—just beyond our doors is a beautiful wooded area that we almost never use. Unlike the well-kept downtown area, our neighborhood and school are in poor repair. Last year, after taking AP Environmental Science, a senior proposed outdoor lunch as her capstone project to help students connect more with nature. Her plan was overlooked—and tragically, she passed away this year from a sudden digestive illness. This year’s AP students want to carry out her vision in her honor. We have the will, the space, and the community support—but we don’t have the funds for sturdy, outdoor seating.
We are asking for help to purchase five long-lasting, metal picnic tables to transform our outdoor space into a place for lunch, learning, and healing.
These tables will be more than just furniture—they will give students access to nature, support mental wellness, and create a much-needed sense of ownership and pride in their environment. Our students are curious, hopeful, and resilient. Many of them walk past blight and broken sidewalks every day to get here. Giving them a clean, inviting outdoor space reminds them that their school—and their ideas—matter.
