A typical day in my classroom involves lots of movement and high energy. My students are in constant motion and having a good time not really realizing that they are working on improving their fitness level.
My middle school has a little over 300 students from 6th to 8th grade in a high poverty community.
I am lucky because I see most students for 50 minutes a day for all of their 3 years at the middle school. Due to funding constraints, the PE department is lacking technology in our program. When I need to teach a new game or skill that needs a visual aid, we have to take 10-15 minutes to go to a classroom with a computer and projector to look up the information. My main focus in PE is to keep the kids moving, I just hate giving up that time.
My Project
The iPad I am requesting would allow my students access to real time data, examples of proper technique, and more time receiving instruction. During fitness testing, I will be able to enter statistics and have access to their prior results allowing me to give instant feedback about improvements.
There are many fitness and nutrition apps available that I would like to show my students so they can start to make some informed decisions about their fitness/nutrition.
Statistics show that our current students are more at risk for health concern and obesity than ever before.
I feel that by incorporating technology into my curriculum, I can really make a difference in their long term health.
