Get Our Students In Their Seats!

My students need 8 iPod shuffles to encourage them to come to class every day.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Every day our students are exposed to violence, crime, and drugs in their community. Only around 40% of the students in our school district end up graduating, and 84% of the students at our school come from low-income families with very limited resources.

We are working primarily with 9th graders.

They are still kids and are having trouble adjusting to high school. We are at an inner city title one school, which means that far too many of our students live in poverty. They face a multitude of challenges in achieving academic success and upward mobility. 9th grade is by far the most difficult year of transition for students, and their attendance during this crucial year is a key indicator of graduation and academic achievement. They miss class for a variety of reasons, the vast majority of which can be prevented and addressed. While our students face so many challenges and barriers, they are also extremely capable, bright, and full of potential. They just need a little bit of support and encouragement.

My Project

9th graders respond overwhelmingly to short-term incentives. They are far more likely to come to class if they know they could be awarded even a modest prize. So we are asking for iPod shuffles, which are quite a luxury in our community. One iPod Shuffle will be raffled off in each of the eight 9th grade homerooms at the end of the year. Those students with perfect attendance will be entered into the drawing. Based on past raffles and rewards (Dodger tickets, pizza, etc.) this will be a huge success and will go a long way towards getting our students excited about coming to school every day and learning! Most of us see iPhones, iPods and computers as routine accessories that everyone has, but most of our students don't have anything like these items since their families simply cannot afford them. These simple iPod Shuffles will make a big impact on our students lives.

Attending class every day during 9th grade creates a culture of attendance and academic success.

If they don't routinely show up for 9th grade, they are far less likely to graduate and move on to higher education and successful careers. Due to budget cuts and the economic downturn, resources are extremely limited. Every month we struggle to come up with incentives for our students. In the end, our program is about empowering our students to succeed. Your help would be greatly appreciated.
