Get On The Bus; Positive People Wanted!

I need The Energy Bus by Jon Gordon for our professional development workshop.

This project expired on February 6, 2017.

My Students

Our students typically come from lower socioeconomic backgrounds. They live mostly in a rural setting and come from blue collar families.

Despite the economic disadvantages at home and within the schools, the students we work with love coming to school and love learning.

We hope to provide learning experiences and opportunities that will continue to enhance their love of learning and foster their academic success.

All students can and will benefit from strong service learning opportunities. The limited opportunities that have been provided, our students have always been very excited and engaged and benefited from a high participation rate.

My Project

Throughout the year we will be providing the staff with character education and service learning ideas through professional development that will benefit both staff and students. We would like for each staff member to read the book, "The Energy Bus", by Jon Gordon. The book offers multiple strategies and tips for overcoming obstacles that people face in their daily lives. These strategies can provide a vision and a focus for our staff here at SES. We will need at least 10 copies of this book in order to train the staff. The goal of each ongoing workshop is to engage the staff in multiple activities, showing how character education and service learning work together in unison. By asking each staff member to read "The Energy Bus" we can facilitate a book study where we can discuss and look more closely at positive attitudes and relationships between both staff and students and its overall effect on the school and community.

The goal is to provide all teachers with 21st century skills, through professional development, that will give our students authentic learning experiences while learning grade level content and real-world 21st century skills.

All teachers will benefit from understanding how service learning and character education work in unison. After reading "The Energy Bus", teachers will have a better understanding of how their behavior and character, directly and indirectly, affects staff and students. This deeper understanding will help teachers as they educate students on the positive and adverse effects of student behavior in their surrounding environment. Through service learning opportunities, students will develop a stronger sense of character and self-identity. Teaching students how to get involved in the community in which they live is a critical need. Students will become empowered through a strong service learning and character education program.
