My students work hard every day so they can make two years of reading growth by the end of the year! They know why reading is important, and now it's time to give them the opportunity to read together. They're so excited to read novels with their friends, and experience books together as a group!
My students are bright, driven, and incredibly hard working.
They know their goal, and they are itching to reach it. They are excited to read anything new, even when it's only a picture book. After I introduce a new book, they all clamber to be the first to grab it during independent reading time. They also love to take charge of their own learning and are always asking to do more group work. Our school is determined to meet students exactly where they are, and support them in moving forward from that point. Although we do have some technology to help us reach our goals, we do not have many books. The books we do have are not leveled or organized, and are mostly picture books.
Right now, we use printed-out passages or e-books to do guided reading work. While these certainly serve their purpose, my students don't particularly enjoy using these materials. These books will give them an opportunity to read on their own level while discovering the joy that comes from reading as a small community. Students will read these novels in small groups, gathering a few times a week to discuss the story. They will work together to create a final project every time they finish a book. Reading these books will certainly help my students improve their reading ability. In order for them to make this kind of growth, they need to be reading books on their own level. They will also help me teach my students to work successfully in groups. Each student will have individual responsibilities to her group, and the pieces will come together in a final project. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, these books will help my students fall even more in love with reading.
These books will stay with us for the whole year.
As students grow, their group will be able to choose more and more complicated texts. They will learn to work together and to enjoy a book together. Help make third grade reading unforgettable for my students by giving them the gift of a great read!
