My Students

My students are motivated English Language Learners from many different parts of the world. They range in ability from those who are just learning their first words in English to those who are writing complex answers to essay questions.

I'm so impressed by the strength of my students.

Most have limited resources at home. Some are refugees and many have traumatic pasts. They spend all day learning in another language and immersed in a culture that may be very different from what they are used to. When they come to ELL class, I like them to feel happy and welcomed.

My Project

When my students come into my room, I often ask them to pick a book to read. That can help build their English vocabulary and make them stronger readers in general. However, for my lower-level students, the pickings are slim.

That's why I'm asking for books at lower reading but higher interest levels.

Books about 3-D printing or the history of fugitive slaves will be interesting to my students, who are bored of books written for first graders. I received a generous donation last year that purchased some great books which really brought life to reading time, and I'd like to do the same for my beginner English speakers.
