Help me give my students a simple and yet comfortable way to settle into a good book. These reading pillows are perfect for focused, independent reading time.
The students in room 25 come from a variety of backgrounds, both ethnically and socio-economically. Each student comes into school with a unique perspective and set of abilities. These diverse backgrounds and interests create an environment of creativity, wonder and excitement around learning!
While reading is a crucial skill, it should also be something that students enjoy.
In our room, reading is a time of exploring topics of interest through many different mediums, while gaining confidence and building patterns of life-long literacy. Throughout the school day, each student has opportunities to engage in reading personally, in small groups and as a class. Regardless of their reading ability entering fourth grade, the goal is that each student will leave fourth grade with a love for reading and a deeper understanding of the necessary comprehension skills to be successful in future grades.
My Project
As someone who loves reading myself, I know that it is much easier to "get lost" in a book when I have a comfortable place to sit. It can be so hard to get comfortable with a book in the classroom because the chairs are hard and the sitting on the floor can be uncomfortable without some place to lean against. These reading pillows will allow students to feel like they are basically on a couch, enjoying the adventures that their book has in store without being distracted by uncomfortable seating.
These reading pillows will line the wall of our reading corner and be available to students as they rotate through literacy stations.
They will also be available for students to use when they need a change of environment, whether that is for testing or some other academic task.
