My Students

Think about how many times a day you use technology (smart phones, computers, iPads) to obtain information. In this day and age, using technology to solve problems and address our curiosities is a common practice. My students are eager to learn more about the world around them and need your help!

At my IB elementary school, my students are inquirers.

They are constantly questioning, observing and reflecting on everything they see and hear. Starting next semester, my students will be researching and reflecting on issues in our community and the world around us. They will be connecting with students at a private school in our area, a high school in our district, and a local liberal arts college. Out of all of the schools participating, our school has the least amount of technology available to students. My classroom is equipped with only one computer for all 26 students to share. They need devices to connect with other students, discover first-hand how to use the internet for research and how to reflect using new media technology. We cannot participate in this unique opportunity without technology to do so!

My Project

My students will use the iPads to engage with students from other schools. Using a media platform called VoiceThread, students will use different mediums, such as audio, video, text and graphics to express their views and findings on different issues. This inquiry-based project is extremely unique to our IB curriculum because it allows students to drive the instruction. Our students will respond to thinking stems, posed by teachers and professors alike, and be able to share their thoughts and views with 70+ K-12 students in the area. Students will be able to conduct research using the internet from the classroom for the first time ever. In less impoverished areas, this is a common practice. My students are talented, bright and academically-driven pupils that deserve the opportunity to participate in an exciting and new learning practice.

Aside from taking AR tests and getting on approved websites, my students have not had any exposure to using technology for research and sharing in the classroom.

At home, my students use tablets and computers for social media. Students will learn how to research and obtain knowledge from credible sources. This project will not only develop a sense of community among young learners and strengthen their academic skills, it will also allow teachers to teach students how to use technology for good.
