My middle school is one of the most reputable middle schools in our county. The students here are successful in their learning endeavors, however, they do not always have the resources that they need due to financial hardships or for reasons that are beyond out of their control.
They want to learn, but may not always have the means to make it happen.
This is frustrating as a teacher because I want all my students to have the same opportunities!
My Project
Our middle school recently transitioned to the STEM/LATIC model, and one of the biggest needs in my ELA classroom, is the need for flexible seating and the new Sunshine State Books for our classroom library. Students can use flexible seating, which means they get to choose where they would like to sit, whether it is to read independently, complete a project, or to use technology.
Classrooms that looks comfortable, inviting, and fun are the most appealing to students.
When you achieve these things in your classroom, students can be more successful in their learning. They are able to work independently and also collaboratively by taking charge of their learning within the STEMLATIC model.
My students need books to read. The Sunshine State Books are the most popular for this age group and are a great way to make everyone interested in reading. The students like the idea of having a choice of books to pick from that they actually get to earn a grade for reading something that they enjoy. Once students pick one of these book titles to read, they will then complete a book project of their choice. They will love the idea of reading these books and completing projects in their classroom's flexible seating library! Two copies of each book are being requested so the power of literature has a wider reach. The carpet and chairs are going to be set up as a reading/work nook. The students can use this area to read or complete work, both individually and collaboratively.
